Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini could still leave the club in the summer after admitting the idea of returning of Argentina ‘still exists’.
The defender was close to completing a move to hometown club San Lorenzo in the January transfer window, but Newcastle manager Alan Pardew confirmed his captain would stay at the club until at least the end of the season.
Coloccini has pledged to give his all for the club during the remainder of the season but admitted a move away could still be on the horizon.
In an article published on Sky Sports, Coloccini said:
“I want to be totally focused on playing for Newcastle now. We will see about the future because the idea of returning to Argentina still exists and I need it.”
Despite rumours that Coloccini had attempted to force a move away, the 31 year old insists he did not want to quit his Newcastle contract.
“When it was known that I had a word with Newcastle officials about returning home to Argentina because of some personal problems, the only thing San Lorenzo did was to open their doors for me.
“They said that if I managed to get out, then they wanted me to play for them, but it wasn’t that I wanted to get out of Newcastle because I wanted to go to Argentina.”
Coloccini is currently playing his part in a mini revival at Newcastle as they aim to drag themselves away from the relegation places. Newcastle currently sit in 15th in the Premier League with 27 points after back to back wins against Aston Villa and Chelsea.
We’ll leave you with some Coloccini stats from last season and this as a comparison and to show his importance to the side.
