Friday the 13th July 2012 represented the start of a new career for one player starting his journey at Liverpool FC. As Fabio Borini passed his medical and was announced as a new signing Maxi Rodriguez ended his two and a half-year stay at Liverpool FC. Maxi will now be returning to his old club Newell’s Old Boys.

Signed by Rafa Benitez in January 2010 Maxi started 48 times in the Premier League for Liverpool FC, scoring 15 goals averaging a goal every 3.2 starts for his side. He also played a total of 3870 mins (including sub appearances) which meant he scored a goal every 258 minutes. (Image above via ShooterGraphic)

All of the stats above are pretty impressive – which surprises us why Maxi didn’t play more often than he did. When he shot half of them were on target and almost 20% found the net – higher than Liverpool’s average last term.

Last season Maxi averaged a goal every 203 minutes which was better than any other Liverpool player in 2011/12. His most memorable goals were in Liverpool’s wins at Stamford Bridge and his hat tricks against Fulham and Birmingham at the start of Kenny Dalglish’s reign.

Maxi became a crowd favourite quickly and his song “MAXI, Maxi Rodriguez runs down the wing for me…” is an Anfield favourite and I’m sure it will be sung when the Reds remember their past favourite songs.

Maxi left the club with the following statement, courtesy of LiverpoolFC.com:

Dear Reds, I am leaving Liverpool FC today.

Before signing for LFC, I just saw the club as one of the greatest institutions in football. After my time here I can confirm that this is not just a great club but also a great family.

I have tried to give everything every day that I was wearing the LFC crest. It has been a great honour to defend this shirt during two and a half years. I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club. Thanks a lot for your support. You can NOT imagine what a great honour it was for me when the Kop sang, ‘Maxi, Maxi Rodríguez runs down the wing for me da da da da dada…’

Hasta la vista.
